Blogging Tips for Moms
When it comes to learning how to start a mom blog, there are many moving pieces you have to put together.
It can feel very overwhelming when you are first starting out.
Between trying to figure out your blog topic, the platform to blog on (discussed below), crafting blog posts and designing your website.
It doesn’t matter if you are a working mom or a stay-at-home mom, starting a blog will take dedication and hard work.
Here are a few tips to help you start a mom blog off on the right foot:
- Choose a blog topic that you are interested in or knowledgeable on. It is generally easier to write on topics that we enjoy or know much about.
- Take shortcuts if and when you can. It took me months of trying to DIY my way through everything. Taking a course will speed things up for you, drastically.
- Blog when the kids are sleeping or napping.
- Stay consistent with your blog. Aim to publish 1-2 blog posts per week.
- When you learn something, act on it. Many people like to learn and learn … and learn. But, then never put in the work. Success won’t come on its own.
And probably the biggest tip of all. Give yourself a little grace.
As a mom, we wear many hats. We may not be able to build our blogs up as quickly as those that don’t have the same duties as us.
It may be hard, but when learning how to start a mom blog, you can’t get caught up in comparing yourself to other bloggers.
They have likely been in the game for years. This is just your beginning. Keep this mind as you start your blog.
Choosing a Blogging Platform
I am a huge advocate of starting a blog on WordPress.org. And, as a matter of fact, it is the only platform I recommend if you plan on monetizing your blog.
There are a number of reasons for this:
- It is completely customizable, with the right tools and resources.
- The WordPress community is expansive. I have never had a question that I have been unable to find an answer for.
- WordPress is known for it’s Search Engine Optimization (SEO) capabilities, which is essential when it comes to blogging.
So, if you are serious about wanting to start a mom blog, skip the free blogging platforms and go straight for WordPress.org. You will be thankful that you did.
Now, if you are just wanting to test out the waters and see if blogging is for you, then by all means feel free to use a free blogging platform. WordPress.com and Blogger are great platforms for this.
How to Start a Mom Blog
Alright, if all of this is sounding good to you, then it is now time to start your mom blog. There are people out there that could be waiting to hear from you!
I have written an extensive 4,000+ word post that goes in depth on all aspects needed to get started with a blog today. Which you can check out here. However, below is a general outline of what you need to get your mom blog off the ground sooner rather than later.
- Choose a niche or topic for your blog. If you are wanting to monetize your blog, research to determine if it is a niche that makes money.
- Select a domain name for your mom blog. This is the web address people will use to find your website online.
- Purchase web hosting through a reputable company, such as NameHero. They are my top web hosting company for beginner and intermediate bloggers alike. I recommend the Plus Cloud plan, but you can also get away with the Starter plan.
- Install WordPress with just 1-click.
- Install helpful plugins for your blog, such as WordFence and RankMath.
- Write blog content that people are actually searching for.
- Design your blog, using the Kadence Theme, which is free and the Elementor Pro plugin, that runs $49 per year.
- Drive traffic to your blog through SEO and marketing.
- Start an email list with MailerLite (free) or ConvertKit (advanced, paid).
And that, in a nutshell, is how to start a mom blog. If there is one thing I want you to take away from this post, it is this.
Blogs thrive on content, it is their lifeblood. They do not exist without content and that is just the reality. If you are thinking about starting a blog, the sooner you start the better off you will be.
I can remember back years ago when I started my first blog. I got caught up in things like domain names, web design and making everything perfect.
I won’t say that all of that is pointless. But, I will say it is way less important than actually getting started and putting your content out there.
If you are ready to start a mom blog or any blog for that matter, I made this super helpful guide just for you. It’s free and shows you everything you need to get started.
FAQ or Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of the most asked questions when it comes to starting a mom blog.
I’m a mom, do I need to blog about mom stuff?
Absolutely not! Just because you are a mom does not mean you have to blog about being a mom. I feel as if many moms get into blogging, thinking that being a mom is the only thing they are qualified to speak on.
But, there are countless other blogs you could create. Such as blogs on food, fashion, finance, gardening, woodworking, home decor, etc.
What is web hosting?
Web hosting stores the information from your website and delivers it to end users. All of the code, images and information from your blog needs to be stored somewhere. And this is done through web hosting.
I always hear about BlueHost, why do you recommend NameHero?
BlueHost is a fine hosting company to get started with. As a matter of fact, I had them for several years, myself some years back.
With that said, NameHero gives a little more control over the backend of your site, has free SSL certificates and is super fast. Not to mention, they have excellent resources to learn everything you’d like to know about hosting.
How much money can I make blogging?
Honestly, this is really going to come down to your niche, content and you. The hard reality is that many blogs don’t even manage to make a penny. Others may do $500 to $1,000 or more per month. And the highest tiers can go on to make $20,000, $50,000 and even $100,000+ per month.
But, how do blogs make money?
Here is something I want you to change your mindset on. When starting a blog with the goal of monetization, you are starting a business. Perhaps, the cheapest business you can start today.
This means, you get to choose how to monetize your blog as there a number of different ways to do so. Blogs make money through advertising, affiliate marketing (selling other people’s products), selling services/consultations, selling digital products or printables, creating and selling courses, etc.
How long will it take me to make money with my blog?
Blogging is not a get rich quick scheme. Not in the least. Again, it’s tough to answer this question as a lot of this is going to be dependent on your niche, content and you.
Here is my general rule I like to follow. Within six months, you should see some type traction, if you are treating your blog like a business, and putting in the work. This means posting high-quality, SEO posts.
How do I start a mom blog if I don’t want my kid’s face showing?
Totally understand. First and foremost, like I mentioned above just because you are a mom, does not mean you need to start a mom blog.
With that said, if you are wanting to start say a kid’s activities blog, there are a couple of things you can do. You could take pictures from behind your child’s head. Another way would be to take pictures at an angle, getting just their hands in the image. I’ve also seen it where the moms will film themselves putting the activity together.
There are ways to protect your children’s privacy while also running a mom blog.
Is blogging still relevant today?
It sure is. As long as people use the internet to search, blogging will be relevant. As a blogger, our job is to answer questions that people have through our content.
Think about the type of questions you have gone to the internet for. “why isn’t my baby sleeping?” “best toys for a 1 year old boy” “what should I pack in my hospital bag?”, etc.
These are all different types of questions that other mom bloggers may help answer. They give their perspective from their own experiences.
